Salt Lick - A Texas BBQ Institution

The Salt Lick in Driftwood, Texas is famous.  It constantly ranks as a top Texas BBQ joint.  This place is deep in the heart of Texas Hill country and 30 minutes from downtown Austin but always seems to have a crowd. You can smell the smoke from the restaurant's open pit from miles away. They use oak wood and wet pecan shells are added to the pit for flavor.  If you like meat then you better get your self some.

The sides include bread, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles and onions.  My favorite is the sausage but my husband loved the brisket and ribs.  If you don't have time to make it all the way to driftwood you can stop at the quick service Salt Lick at the Austin International Airport.   Salt Lick is also available for delivery with Favor.   Down load the Favor app from the app store.

If you don't live in Texas but still want to try out this delicious BBQ they ship nation wide.  Click here and you place an order.

Salt lick has a store that sells hats, t-shirts like my favorite "I like pig butts and I can not lie", coffee cups, cook books and bbq sauce.  WARNING:  Salt Lick store and restaurant are CASH ONLY - be prepared.  They do have ATM machines available onsite of you forget.

The Salt lick is BYOB, which is great.  You can bring a cooler full of beer or wine and sit down on picnic tables and enjoy some sausage, brisket or ribs.   But if you forgot to bring any alcoholic drinks then stop by Salt Lick Cellars tasting room and pick up a bottle of wine.  They serve ice tea, sodas and have fresh squeezed lemonade for purchase as well.

There can be a wait for a table so while you wait they have live music.  You can sit under the shade and listen.  They sell popcorn and fresh lemonade.  You can drink your BYOB or stop by the Salt Lick Cellars tasting room or head over the the play ground area.   You can also order to go and take it with you or eat it at one of the many out door picnic tables they have in front of the live music or surrounding the property.  Hint if you have kids you can eat at the play ground and open fields where they have tables.
